engAGED Virtual Aging Network Social Engagement Summit

On July 22, 2021, engAGED: The National Resource Center for Engaging Older Adults brought together national, state and local Aging Network leaders for an interactive discussion and dialogue on social engagement and social isolation. The Virtual Summit featured creative solutions for addressing social isolation to spur ideas for replication at the local level and spotlight national resources and initiatives to support social engagement efforts.

Partners in Social Engagement: Collaborating with Parks and Recreation Agencies

The February 22 engAGED webinar, taking place from 1:00-2:00 pm ET, will focus on partnering with parks and recreation agencies to offer social engagement opportunities. The National Recreation and Park Association will highlight how parks and recreation agencies are working locally to address social isolation while the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services will share how they developed collaborative efforts with their local parks and recreation departments to create opportunities for social engagement for older adults.

Developing Volunteer Opportunities to Help Older Adults Stay Engaged

The January webinar focused on volunteerism as a form of social engagement. AmeriCorps Seniors highlighted the benefits of volunteerism and ways the Aging Network can foster civic engagement through volunteerism while Erie County Department of Senior Services and Area Agency on Aging, Region One shared how they created and sustained volunteer opportunities that help older adults remain engaged and connected.

Arts and Creative Engagement: Successful Programs, Activities and Approaches

The December webinar focused on the impact of multidisciplinary, participatory arts experiences on older adults. Arts for the Aging, Scripps Gerontology Center and the Central Vermont Council on Aging shared information about their arts programs and how Aging Network organizations can incorporate creative expression into their social engagement work.

Addressing Social Isolation in Rural America

The November webinar focused on addressing social isolation of older adults living in rural America. The UMaine Center on Aging, Jefferson Area Board for Aging and the Wyandotte Nation Title VI Aging Program provided background on rural aging and issues and highlighted local social engagement activities they have developed to help older adults and caregivers living in rural and tribal communities stay engaged and connected.

Social engagement opportunities are many and varied including, civic engagement/volunteerism, creative and cultural participation, intergenerational opportunities, lifelong learning and technology. And we have learned that remaining engaged in activities and community contributes to greater physical, mental and emotional health and well-being in older adults thereby helping to avoid the negative impacts of isolation.
