Addressing the Social Connection Needs of Veterans
Every November 11, we recognize and express gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices of veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. In addition to honoring their service, this observance provides an opportunity to engage a population that may be at significant risk of social isolation and loneliness. Through their service, veterans may lose contact with friends or family due to multiple moves or deployments, service-related health issues or the challenges of reintegrating into civilian life. This November, consider engaging with veterans in your community!
Resources to Support Veterans Year-Round
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) helps connect veterans and active service members to care and benefits. For example, the VA offers the Compassionate Care Corps, a social prescription program that matches trained VA volunteers with veterans who are isolated or feel lonely. Volunteers call their matched veteran once a week for friendly conversation and companionship. Learn more about the Compassionate Care Corps, including program benefits and how to participate here. For additional VA resources and assistance navigating healthcare, education and training services, visit the VA website for a VA locator.

Below are two community program examples from the Social Engagement Innovations Hub that foster social connection among veterans. The Innovations Hub offers replicable examples to inspire and inform your organization’s social engagement efforts.
Showing Those Who Serve the Gratitude They Deserve
After the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc. (AOoA), worked with the VA and other partners to build an apartment community for homeless and disabled veterans, they discovered many residents were frequenting a gas station to purchase food for meals. To address food insecurity and the lack of nutritious options, AOoA created a weekly brunch program. Veterans now gather once a week for a nutritious meal and the opportunity to socialize, helping reduce social isolation.
Veterans Socials: Veteran Outreach Into the Community to Expand Social Support (VOICES)
Veterans Socials (VS) is a community-based initiative designed to enhance social support and foster connections among veterans. VS is coordinated by the Veteran Outreach Into the Community to Expand Social Support team in the VA New England Mental Illness, Research Education and Clinical Center. This social intervention addresses critical issues such as isolation, stigma and lack of awareness about mental health services that hinder many veterans from seeking help and connecting with others in their community.
